Smoke Signals from the Hand Hills
By Richard Lucier-larson
The executive of the Hand Hills Michif Cultural Society wishes to thank the many people who participated, some from Vancouver Island B.C.
Our Dance Group from Prince George was very professional working with the Musicians (The Bunkhouse Boys) from Airdrie and Manitoba.
Our Saturday Night entertainment and dinner was near to sell-out with everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves, the only complaint heard was someone who had to wait for the delicious “Suz Sinclair” Frybread (about ¾ hr) .
We had lots of compliments on the activities, entertainment, food, and music.
The Gathering is carried out by a non–political group of Métis people in a family orientated, no Drugs, No Alcohol manner, open to the public.
In our three gatherings in this area we have had no negative incidents.
In 2009 we attracted about 300 to 500 visitors each day of the gathering, the Saturday dinner and dance packed the community hall.
The Gathering has been considered a healthy positive family event for the community.
We hope that the campgrounds will be Herbicide and Pesticide free.
The Hand Hills Michif Cultural Society, which has successfully conducted The Michif/Métis Gathering in for 2007, 2008, and 2009, and is having the event again in Delia
